Two Sri Lankan tourists were injured after debris from a heritage shophouse fell onto a busy street in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The incident happened at around 1 p.m. on Monday, August 3, along Lebuh Armenian, a popular tourist destination within the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to local authorities, stones and timber from a first-floor beam suddenly broke away from the historic building and struck the visitors as they were walking through the area. The injured tourists were identified as 66-year-old Mohamad Ammtar and 55-year-old Fatimah. Emergency responders provided first aid at the scene before both were transported to Penang Hospital for further medical treatment. Officials confirmed that both victims suffered head injuries.
A preliminary inspection found that a wooden beam weakened by termite infestation was the likely cause of the collapse. Authorities said the damaged timber failed, causing debris to fall from the building. Following the incident, Penang's Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee announced that the state's Heritage Department would assess the structural condition of heritage buildings across the area. Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said preserving Penang's historic architecture must go hand in hand with ensuring public safety. He noted that while heritage restoration requires maintaining the original appearance of buildings, replacing deteriorated wooden components with suitable modern materials could be considered if the exterior character is preserved.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai, who visited the accident site, said the incident highlighted the importance of regular structural inspections of ageing heritage buildings to prevent similar accidents. He also confirmed that his office had contacted the Sri Lankan High Commission to provide assistance to the injured tourists, who had been scheduled to return to Sri Lanka the following day.

The accident marks the second case of falling debris involving an old building in George Town within a matter of days. On August 1, part of the roof of another heritage property on Jalan Green Hall collapsed onto the road, crushing a parked vehicle. Fortunately, no one was inside the car at the time. Lebuh Armenian is one of George Town's oldest and busiest streets, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The area is famous for its well-preserved heritage shophouses and landmarks, including Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic's internationally recognised "Children on a Bicycle" street mural.
