The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved another major milestone with the successful launch of the GSLV-F17 rocket carrying the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite. The launch took place at 2:55 AM IST on September 4, 2026, from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. ISRO confirmed that the spacecraft was successfully placed into its intended orbit. The successful mission represents an important step forward in India’s Earth Observation capabilities. EOS-05 has been developed to provide a much wider and more continuous view of the country and surrounding areas compared with conventional Earth-observation satellites operating in lower orbits. Its placement toward a geosynchronous orbit is expected to provide valuable data for applications where frequent monitoring is important.
EOS-05 is an advanced imaging satellite intended to strengthen India’s ability to observe changes taking place on Earth. From its planned geosynchronous position, the satellite can repeatedly monitor a large area, making its observations particularly useful for tracking rapidly changing weather and environmental conditions. The satellite is expected to support monitoring of natural disasters, including cyclones, cloudbursts, thunderstorms and other extreme weather events. More frequent observations can help authorities understand the development and movement of such events and improve the availability of information for disaster-management operations. The satellite’s data will also have applications in agriculture, forestry, water resources, environmental monitoring and other areas that depend on timely information about conditions on the ground.
The GSLV-F17 mission is the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. The rocket is a three-stage launch vehicle that combines solid, liquid and cryogenic propulsion systems. Its indigenous cryogenic upper stage provides the capability required to place heavier spacecraft into high-altitude transfer orbits. Following separation from the launch vehicle, EOS-05 is expected to perform additional orbital manoeuvres before reaching its operational geosynchronous position. This orbit, roughly 36,000 kilometres above Earth, allows the spacecraft to remain aligned with a particular region for extended observation.
GEO or geosynchronous orbit is particularly valuable for observation because a satellite operating from this region can maintain a consistent view of a broad geographical area. This is different from many low-Earth-orbit satellites, which move around the planet and observe a particular location only when they pass overhead. For disaster management, this difference can be significant. Continuous or highly frequent imaging can provide authorities with updated information during fast-moving events, potentially helping with forecasting, assessment and response planning.
The latest achievement also carries significance because it follows the unsuccessful GSLV-F10/EOS-03 mission of August 2021. During that earlier mission, the EOS-03 satellite could not be placed into its intended orbit after an issue involving the cryogenic upper stage. ISRO’s successful GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission demonstrates the agency’s continued progress in high-altitude satellite launches. The new mission therefore represents more than another satellite launch. It demonstrates India’s continuing effort to strengthen its launch-vehicle reliability and expand its space-based observation infrastructure.
One of the most important aspects of EOS-05 is the range of practical applications expected from its observations. Frequent satellite imagery can help agencies track changing weather systems, assess disaster-affected regions and study environmental changes. In agriculture, satellite observations can contribute to monitoring crops and land conditions. For forestry and water-resource management, regularly updated imagery can help researchers and authorities study large areas that may be difficult to monitor from the ground. During major weather emergencies, such as cyclones, cloudbursts and severe thunderstorms, timely satellite information can become an important source of situational awareness.
The successful launch strengthens India’s growing capabilities in Space Technology and satellite-based Earth monitoring. ISRO has increasingly focused on using space missions not only for scientific research but also for practical applications that support national development. The GSLV-F17/EOS-05 mission also adds another important spacecraft to India’s Earth-observation infrastructure. With its advanced imaging role and high-altitude operational concept, EOS-05 is expected to provide data that can support multiple civilian and strategic applications. ISRO’s official mission update confirms that GSLV-F17 successfully accomplished its mission and placed EOS-05 into the intended orbit.
