Jim Avila, Esteemed Journalist, Passes Away at 70

Jim Avila, Esteemed Journalist, Passes Away at 70

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Acclaimed journalist Jim Avila has passed away at the age of 70 after battling a prolonged illness. He was recognized nationally for his decades-long career as a senior correspondent and his impactful storytelling, marking a significant loss for American journalism.

Avila's tenure included prominent roles as a Senior National Correspondent and White House reporter across major national networks. His journey included reporting on pivotal stories and political events that shaped the nation.

A Heartfelt Tribute

His younger brother, investigative journalist Jaie Avila, confirmed the news and offered a moving tribute:
“Jim was an incredible reporter. He inspired me to pursue a career in news and many other aspects of life,” Jaie remarked. “He garnered numerous accolades, but he was particularly proud of his induction into the National Association of Hispanic Journalists Hall of Fame in 2019.”

Their connection deepened beyond the profession. In 2018, when Jim faced kidney failure, Jaie generously donated a kidney to him.
“Jim treasured his three children—Jamie, Jenny, and Evan. The transplant allowed him to witness one of his children's weddings and embrace two grandchildren. That was a true blessing,” Jaie reflected.

Jim candidly discussed how the transplant transformed his life:
“Without it, I wouldn’t have survived... Jaie and my kids gave me a second chance. I couldn’t have endured dialysis for six to eight years,” he said post-surgery. “We raced to get this done before dialysis, and we succeeded.”

A Distinguished Career in Journalism

Throughout his time covering the White House, Jim was a pivotal correspondent during the Obama administration. His investigative journalism and political reporting significantly influenced national discussions on crucial policy reforms, notably the historic reestablishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, a story that garnered him the distinguished Merriman Smith Memorial Award.

Beyond politics, Avila was celebrated for his courageous reporting, acute analytical skills, and the ability to clarify complex national matters. His remarkable achievements include:

  • Two National Emmy Awards

  • Five Edward R. Murrow Awards

  • Numerous accolades recognizing excellence in investigative journalism and public service

In 2021, Avila stepped back from national news but returned in 2023 as a senior investigative reporter at KGTV-TV in San Diego, reaffirming his lifelong passion for journalism.

Honoring a Legacy of Truth and Courage

Colleagues in the industry remember Jim not only for his award-winning contributions but also for his steadfast dedication to truth, integrity, and mentorship.

In a heartfelt message honoring his legacy, ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic stated, “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, especially his three children, and express gratitude for his many contributions and unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth.”

Jim Avila's legacy is one of excellence, bravery, and a profound love for journalism—a legacy that will inspire and shape future generations of journalists.
