Neena Gupta praises salwar kameez as smart, practical travel wear for women

Neena Gupta praises salwar kameez as smart, practical travel wear for women

Post by : Saif Rahman

Veteran actor Neena Gupta has once again highlighted a no-nonsense approach to dressing. In a recent Instagram clip, she recommended the traditional salwar kameez as an ideal travel outfit for women, describing it as comfortable, useful and problem-solving.

The 66-year-old, admired for candid views and an unpretentious style, noted that the Indian suit marries elegance with practical benefits for journeys by air and rail — particularly when it comes to staying clean and comfortable.

Neena Gupta’s travel tip

Appearing in the video dated October 26, Neena explained in Hindi why she chooses a salwar kameez on trips: the cut and features are made for convenience. She highlighted the narrow salwar cuff — often called the pocha — which keeps the trouser hem from brushing dirty toilet floors on trains or aeroplanes.

She advised keeping the cuff fairly slim, around a foot in width, so the fabric won’t drag. According to her, that small design detail prevents clothes from getting wet or soiled in cramped, less-than-clean restrooms.

Dupatta doubles as a wrap

Neena also pointed out the dupatta’s utility. If cabin or platform air turns chilly, she said, you can simply drape the dupatta over your shoulders for warmth and modesty — blending comfort with a touch of style.

She argued this makes the salwar kameez a more adaptable option than sporty track pants or some Western separates, which may not offer the same protection or ease.

Simple, thoughtful travel dressing

In the clip she recommended keeping the salwar length ankle-high to prevent tripping and allow easier movement. Footwear can be traditional juttis or casual sneakers, she added, depending on convenience and the occasion.

"It’s a very good Indian outfit to travel in," Neena observed, noting that the ensemble combines neatness, comfort and versatility — from dealing with cold air to avoiding dirty floors.

Her followers praised the pragmatic advice, with many commenting that they had faced similar travel annoyances and welcomed the straightforward fix.

Why the suggestion rings true

Travel specialists say Neena’s points are sensible for those who favour traditional clothing. Salwar kameez garments are often made in light, breathable fabrics that allow freer movement than rigid jeans, while the loose silhouette helps during long trips. The dupatta can serve multiple roles — a blanket, head cover or simple accessory.

Fashion consultant Nishtha Sood supported the idea, saying Neena’s perspective reflects practical dressing: the salwar kameez is timeless, season-friendly and easy to care for, while also offering modest coverage.

Comfort meets culture

Neena Gupta has long been appreciated for her frankness and grounded choices, whether speaking about ageing or style. This latest video is another instance of her promoting traditional wear that remains relevant and useful rather than simply following Western trends.

She smiled as she summed up her view: people may prefer track pants, but the salwar kameez keeps you comfortable, clean and presentable — suitable for many settings.

Takeaway for travellers

The message is clear: practical travel clothing need not be complicated. Next time you pack for a train or flight, consider a soft cotton or silk salwar kameez — a blend of tradition, convenience and comfort that, in Neena Gupta’s words, solves many travel problems.
