The visit will centre on strengthening bilateral relations and identifying new areas of cooperation between the two Southeast Asian nations. The upcoming meeting will mark the first Singapore-Thailand leaders' retreat between Mr Wong and Mr Anutin. It will also be the first such retreat between Singapore and Thailand since the previous edition was hosted by Singapore in 2015. The visit is being closely watched as both countries look to expand their traditional cooperation in defence and economic affairs while building stronger partnerships in emerging sectors such as digital technology, renewable energy and the green economy.
During the retreat, the two prime ministers are expected to review the long-standing relationship between Singapore and Thailand. According to information released by Singapore's Prime Minister's Office, discussions will cover existing cooperation in defence and economic matters, along with opportunities to expand collaboration in several newer areas. Among the key subjects expected to feature in the discussions are green economic development, digital transformation, energy resilience, food security and efforts to tackle transnational crime. The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on major regional and international developments that could affect Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region. The discussions are expected to provide an opportunity for Singapore and Thailand to coordinate their approaches on issues of mutual interest while strengthening the broader relationship between the two countries.
The Singapore Thailand Leaders Retreat is regarded as the highest-level bilateral platform between the two countries. Unlike routine diplomatic meetings, the retreat provides the leaders with an opportunity to discuss a broad range of bilateral, regional and international issues in greater detail. The upcoming meeting will be particularly significant because it is the first retreat involving Mr Wong and Mr Anutin. It also comes more than a decade after the previous Singapore-Thailand leaders' retreat was held in 2015. The two governments are expected to use the meeting to build on existing cooperation and identify practical areas where closer collaboration could benefit both countries.
One of the key outcomes expected from the meeting is an agreement aimed at deepening cooperation in social sector development. The agreement could provide a framework for the two countries to exchange knowledge and experience in areas related to social development and public policy. Economic relations between the two countries have expanded significantly in recent years. Bilateral trade between Singapore and Thailand reached S$52.4 billion, equivalent to about US$41.1 billion, in 2025. The figure represented a 17.8 per cent increase compared with the previous year, highlighting the continued importance of the two countries' commercial relationship. Thailand was Singapore's ninth-largest trading partner globally in 2025 and its third-largest trading partner within ASEAN.
Singapore was Thailand's largest source of foreign direct investment, with investment reaching approximately US$17.57 billion. These figures underline the depth of the economic relationship and explain why trade, investment and new economic sectors are expected to remain central to the leaders' discussions.
Beyond conventional trade, Singapore and Thailand have increasingly been looking at emerging sectors that could drive future growth. Digital trade is one such area, with both countries seeking to take advantage of rapid technological development and the expansion of online commerce. Carbon markets and renewable energy are also becoming increasingly important as governments across the region work towards more sustainable economic development. Closer cooperation in these fields could encourage investment, promote innovation and help businesses from both countries access new opportunities.
The upcoming Lawrence Wong visit comes after Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul travelled to Singapore in November last year. That visit took place shortly after Mr Anutin assumed office as Thailand's prime minister. The two leaders have therefore already had an opportunity to begin developing their bilateral relationship, but the Bangkok retreat will provide a more comprehensive platform for discussions. The meeting is expected to help establish priorities for the next phase of cooperation.
The Bangkok programme will include several formal engagements. Mr Anutin is expected to host Mr Wong for a private lunch during the retreat. The Thai prime minister will also host an official dinner in honour of his Singaporean counterpart. Such engagements are expected to complement the formal bilateral discussions and provide an opportunity for the two leaders to further strengthen personal and diplomatic ties.
The leaders' retreat is not the only mechanism through which Singapore and Thailand cooperate. The two countries already maintain several institutional platforms designed to facilitate economic and government-to-government cooperation. These include the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship platform and the Singapore-Thailand Civil Service Exchange Programme. Such mechanisms allow officials from both countries to discuss policy issues, exchange expertise and identify opportunities for closer cooperation. The upcoming retreat is expected to provide political direction for these existing channels while potentially creating new areas of collaboration.
The fight against transnational crime is another major issue expected to feature in the talks. Cross-border criminal activities can affect multiple countries simultaneously and often require coordinated regional responses. Singapore and Thailand are expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in this area. The issue is particularly relevant as Southeast Asian governments continue to work together on regional security challenges and cross-border threats. The leaders are also expected to exchange views on wider regional and international developments.
Prime Minister Wong will travel to Bangkok with a senior delegation from the Singapore government. His delegation will include Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu, Social and Family Development Minister Masagos Zulkifli, and Digital Development and Information Minister Josephine Teo.
The presence of ministers responsible for defence, foreign affairs, sustainability, social development and digital development reflects the wide-ranging nature of the discussions planned for the retreat.
The upcoming meeting comes at a time when Southeast Asian countries are seeking stronger regional cooperation amid changing global economic and geopolitical conditions. For Singapore and Thailand, the retreat offers an opportunity to reinforce their long-standing partnership while preparing for future challenges. Traditional areas such as defence, trade and investment remain important, but newer sectors including digital technology, clean energy and sustainable development are increasingly shaping the bilateral agenda. The expected social sector agreement also indicates that the relationship is expanding beyond economic and security matters.
