Singapore Launches Campaign Amid Rise in Sex Crimes

Singapore Launches Campaign Amid Rise in Sex Crimes

Post by : Shakul

Authorities in Singapore have launched a nationwide campaign encouraging the public to take action against sexual crimes, following a noticeable rise in reported cases during 2025. The initiative aims to empower individuals to respond safely when they witness such incidents.

The campaign, titled “Don’t be a Bystander! SPOT it. Report it,” was introduced by Sim Ann during a police seminar. It focuses on raising awareness and promoting community responsibility in preventing sexual offences.

Recent data highlights a concerning increase in molestation cases, which rose from 1,427 in 2024 to 1,531 in 2025. Authorities noted that a majority of these incidents occurred in public spaces, including transport systems and nightlife areas, indicating a growing need for vigilance in everyday environments.

Rape cases also saw a significant rise, increasing from 401 in 2024 to 479 in 2025. This translates to more than one reported case per day, further underscoring the seriousness of the issue and the need for immediate intervention measures.

Overall, sexual assault cases, including both molestation and rape, increased by nearly 10 percent. Additionally, cases involving victims under the age of 16 also rose, raising concerns about the safety of minors and the need for stronger protective measures.

A key feature of the campaign is the SPOT protocol, which guides bystanders on how to respond. It encourages individuals to identify suspicious situations, protect victims without putting themselves at risk, observe important details, and report incidents to the police promptly.

Authorities emphasized that while public involvement is crucial, individuals should avoid directly confronting perpetrators or engaging in actions like online doxing, which may have legal consequences. The focus remains on safe and responsible intervention.

The campaign also addresses the increasing risk of online sexual crimes. Officials have urged parents to monitor their children’s digital activity and educate them about online safety, especially in situations involving unknown individuals seeking personal information.

Officials reiterated that victims should report any form of sexual crime regardless of when it occurred, as timely reporting helps preserve evidence and ensures quicker action against offenders.
