In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of a brutal assault on a woman advocate in New Delhi. The case, which has raised serious concerns about safety and access to medical care, is now under direct judicial scrutiny.
A bench led by Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued directions to the Delhi Police to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. The court instructed that the probe should be handed over to a senior officer, preferably a woman, holding the rank of ACP or DCP.
The incident reportedly involves a woman advocate who was allegedly assaulted by her husband. The seriousness of the case prompted the apex court to step in on its own, without waiting for a formal petition, highlighting the urgency and gravity of the matter.
The court also raised concerns over reports that three hospitals refused to admit the victim following the assault. It directed the investigating officer to examine this aspect carefully and determine whether there was any negligence or violation of medical protocols.
Legal experts have noted that the Supreme Court’s intervention sends a strong message about the importance of protecting victims of violence and ensuring accountability at every level. The direction to appoint a senior and preferably female officer is seen as an effort to ensure sensitivity and fairness in handling the case.
The Delhi Police is expected to comply with the court’s orders and expedite the investigation. Officials have indicated that necessary steps are being taken to transfer the case to an appropriate officer and review all related evidence and testimonies.
This case has once again brought attention to issues of domestic violence and the responsibility of institutions, including law enforcement and healthcare providers, to respond effectively. The Supreme Court’s involvement is likely to influence how similar cases are handled in the future.
