Thailand has entered a period of deep mourning following the death of Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, at the age of 93. The Royal Household Bureau confirmed that Queen Sirikit passed away on October 24, 2025, in a hospital in Bangkok after battling a severe blood infection since October 17. Despite ongoing medical care, her condition deteriorated, leading to her peaceful passing surrounded by family and medical staff.
Revered as the “Mother of the Nation,” Queen Sirikit was admired for her lifelong dedication to social welfare, arts, and Thai cultural heritage. Her death has left the nation heartbroken, marking the end of an era for the Thai monarchy.
The Thai government has declared an official mourning period to honour Queen Sirikit’s memory. Flags at all government buildings, schools, and state offices will be flown at half-mast for 30 days, while civil servants and state enterprise employees will observe a year-long mourning period. Citizens have been encouraged to wear black or dark-coloured clothing for 90 days as a sign of respect.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has assured that tourist activities and services remain operational, including hotels, transport, and attractions. However, travellers are advised to remain respectful of the national mood. While there are no restrictions on visiting tourist sites, visitors are urged to dress modestly, avoid loud celebrations, and show decorum when visiting temples or royal premises such as the Grand Palace.
Events, nightlife, and entertainment venues will continue to function, but organisers have been asked to tone down festivities during this solemn period. Large gatherings may undergo minor adjustments to align with the national atmosphere of mourning.
Dress respectfully: Black or subdued clothing is encouraged.
Behave appropriately in public places: Avoid loud or festive behaviour, particularly near religious or royal sites.
Check event schedules: Some events may be modified but not cancelled.
Stay informed: Follow updates from official tourism and government channels.
In an official statement, the Tourism Authority of Thailand confirmed that there is no suspension of public events, entertainment, or business operations. However, organisers have been asked to adjust tone and presentation in line with the country’s emotional state.
Government spokespersons expressed appreciation to the public and international visitors for showing sensitivity and respect during this period of national loss. Businesses and cultural institutions are expected to operate with decorum and dignity, reflecting the nation’s reverence for Queen Sirikit’s legacy.
As Thailand mourns, the country continues to celebrate the life and contributions of Queen Sirikit, whose compassion, cultural influence, and love for her people remain an enduring part of Thailand’s royal heritage.
