On Sunday, August 24, 2025, Alexandra Eala created history at the US Open in New York. The 20-year-old from Quezon City, Philippines, became the first tennis player from her country to win a Grand Slam singles match.
Eala achieved this by defeating Denmark’s Clara Tauson, the 14th seed, in a thrilling first-round match. The final score was 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (13/11). What made the win even more special was her incredible comeback in the last set. She was losing 5-1 but fought back with courage and refused to give up.
After the win, Eala collapsed on the court with tears of joy. “I’m super over the moon with what I was able to do today,” she said. “I take so much pride in representing my country. It makes what I do bigger than myself.”
This victory is the highlight of what has already been a remarkable season for Eala. Earlier this year, she shocked the tennis world by defeating Australian Open champion Madison Keys and former world number one Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open. That run took her all the way to the semi-finals of the tournament, proving that she has the talent to compete with the best.
Eala is no stranger to success at Flushing Meadows. In 2022, she won the US Open girls’ title. But Sunday’s triumph was on a much bigger stage, against a top-ranked opponent, and in front of a global audience.
Eala’s win was not the only surprise of the day. Indonesia’s Janice Tjen also pulled off an upset, defeating 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova. For Eala, this shared success made the moment even more meaningful.
“I’m so happy to see the progress of tennis in Southeast Asia,” Eala said. “I’ve known Janice for a long time, so it’s special to see her winning too.”
Her comments show how much pride she feels in representing not just her country but also her region. For young players in Southeast Asia, her success is proof that they can dream big and reach the world stage.
Even though Eala’s win was historic, she knows the tournament is not over yet. Her focus now is on recovery and preparation for the next round. “The key for my upcoming match is to come in with the same mentality, same fight,” she said.
Her never-say-die attitude, especially in tight situations, has already made her a player to watch. Having lost tough matches before, she used those experiences to stay strong in the pressure-filled tiebreak against Tauson.
Eala’s victory is more than just a personal success. It is a milestone for Philippine sports. Tennis has never been a major sport in the country, and no Filipino player had ever won a singles match in a Grand Slam before. Eala’s achievement may inspire more children to pick up a tennis racket and dream of competing on the biggest stages.
For many fans back home, this win was emotional. It showed that with hard work, courage, and belief, even athletes from countries with less tradition in a sport can make history.
Alexandra Eala’s victory at the US Open is a story of hope, courage, and national pride. From being down 5-1 in the deciding set to winning 13-11 in a nail-biting tiebreak, her journey in this match was a perfect example of fighting spirit.
The young star has already written her name in Philippine sports history, but this may only be the beginning. With her talent, determination, and love for her country, Alexandra Eala is not just playing tennis—she is inspiring a generation.
