A British Airways passenger was handcuffed during a long-haul flight from Los Angeles to London Heathrow after allegedly threatening passengers and abusing crew members. The British Airways passenger, identified as Simon Jones, 51, displayed aggressive and erratic behavior throughout the 10-hour journey on May 23, prompting the captain to authorize his restraint.
According to the court proceedings, the British Airways passenger became disruptive even before takeoff. Prosecutor Ashleigh Ettienne told Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court that Jones was shouting, clapping, and demanding drinks loudly during pre-flight checks. When approached by the cabin crew, the British Airways passenger began yelling profanities and demanding alcohol, saying, “Can I have a f***** glass?”* and “Give me a glass for my f***** drink!”*
Throughout the flight, the British Airways passenger repeatedly got up from his seat to use the toilet and started verbally abusing those around him. When a fellow flyer asked him to stop swearing, Jones allegedly threatened, “I’ll put that into your f**g face,”* after a minor contact between their seats. The British Airways passenger also sat on the emergency door and refused to follow crew instructions, forcing the captain to intervene and order that he be handcuffed to his seat.
The British Airways passenger’s behavior caused major distress onboard. Ms. Ettienne said Jones had become “irate,” was “gritting his teeth,” and “pacing up and down the cabin,” leading the captain to ban him from consuming any more alcohol. The crew was forced to monitor him every 15 minutes until landing, which “significantly impacted” their ability to serve other passengers.
During the hearing, defense lawyer Gurbinder Tamana stated that the British Airways passenger suffered from bipolar disorder and was not taking his prescribed medication at the time of the incident. She emphasized that Jones had since stabilized, started new medication, and found employment, describing his actions as “completely out of character.”
Judge Kathryn Verghis ruled that the British Airways passenger’s behavior was “sustained and unacceptable,” impacting both passengers and staff. Jones received a 12-month community order, including 150 hours of unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation days. He was also fined £400 in costs, £114 as a victim surcharge, and ordered to pay £150 in compensation to the affected passenger. Additionally, the British Airways passenger was banned from international travel for six months.
The incident has raised renewed concerns over passenger conduct during long-haul flights. Airlines, including British Airways, continue to emphasize zero tolerance for unruly or aggressive behavior in the air, underscoring the importance of ensuring safety and respect for both passengers and crew members.
