Severe rainfall has led to catastrophic flooding across southern Thailand and parts of Malaysia, resulting in 13 fatalities and extensive destruction. These floods, the worst in a decade and a half, have impacted millions and hindered rescue operations.
The crisis escalated on Tuesday, particularly in Hat Yai, one of the most affected cities, where floodwaters have surged to 2 meters (6.6 feet). Nine provinces in Thailand and eight states in Malaysia are currently grappling with significant water damage.
To combat this disaster, Thailand's navy is dispatching the aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet, accompanied by 14 vessels, helicopters, medical teams, supplies, and field kitchens capable of producing 3,000 meals each day. This ship will also function as a floating hospital to aid in medical care and rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has remarked that these floods represent the most severe crisis in recent years, noting the overwhelming number of requests for help in Hat Yai. Many citizens are now trapped without essential supplies such as food, clean water, or communication. One Facebook user expressed despair over being trapped with dwindling food and water supplies as the floodwaters continued to rise.
In Malaysia, the flooding situation has led to the evacuation of over 18,500 individuals to 126 emergency shelters, mostly in northern regions near the Thai border. In Perlis, rescue operations are ongoing, with teams working through knee-deep waters and boats providing lifesaving assistance to elderly residents. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to citizens to adhere to evacuation orders and assured comprehensive government support for those affected.
The flooding crisis poses a risk to vital sectors, particularly Thailand's rubber industry, globally significant as one of the largest producers and exporters. Authorities fear that rubber production may drop by over 10,000 tons due to the disaster, raising further economic alarm.
Social media has been flooded with images and videos depicting submerged vehicles, inundated streets, and ongoing rescue operations. Many individuals have been seen clutching onto floating debris as rescue boats maneuver through the deluged areas.
Officials have issued alerts for more intense rainfall and flash floods, cautioning residents against using small boats due to treacherous waves that could reach 3 meters (10 feet).
These floods have triggered a humanitarian emergency, with numerous people urgently calling for aid. Rescue teams are striving against challenging conditions to reach isolated communities and deliver relief.
This alarming flooding situation underscores the region’s susceptibility to extreme weather during the monsoon season, reaffirming the importance of ongoing disaster preparedness and community support.
