Dubai is charting an ambitious course for its media sector under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In a recent Dubai Media Council meeting, a goal was set to elevate the media sector’s GDP contribution from 1.4% to 3% by the year 2033, aligning this initiative with Dubai's broader Economic Agenda D33.
During discussions, Sheikh Ahmed pointed out the media industry's significant yet unrealized potential in enhancing Dubai's economic stature and global presence. He emphasized the necessity for collaborative efforts between public and private media entities, bolstered by governance and policies that foster sustainable development.
A key emphasis was placed on advancing digital transformation. Sheikh Ahmed remarked that it’s essential for Dubai’s media to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies, highlighting how digital platforms are integral to both local community engagement and the emirate's international recognition. He reaffirmed the need for innovative digital tools and content creation to represent Dubai's leadership and contemporary character.
The Council examined performance targets aimed for 2033, which include increasing media exports, enhancing local content creation, attracting foreign investment, and amplifying Dubai's influence in regional and global markets. New committees focused on film and gaming development have been established, supporting burgeoning creative industries.
Her Excellency Mona Al Marri remarked that with the new regulatory oversight transferred to the Dubai Media Council under Law No. 29 of 2024, operational efficiency has improved, aligning the sector with international standards. She emphasized that the revised regulatory framework strengthens Dubai's stature as a leading centre for both creative and professional media.
The meeting also featured initiatives designed to foster young Emirati talent, which include skill development programs and the recently launched Dubai Film and Games Forum, aimed at supporting aspiring media professionals.
Sheikh Ahmed endorsed the updated digital strategy for Dubai Media Incorporated, which involves enhancing the “Awaan” platform, investing in original content, and increasing audience interaction through emerging formats like podcasts. DMI’s strategy aims to establish a robust digital identity anchored in youth-driven narratives and widely appealing Emirati content.
Members of the DMI Youth Council took part in the meeting as part of a concerted effort to empower future leaders within the media landscape. The session concluded with engagement from participants enrolled in media talent programs aimed at grooming second- and third-tier national leaders for enhanced roles in the industry.
Dubai's latest framework represents the beginning of a dynamic decade characterized by intensified innovation, increased international visibility, and a strengthened commitment to establishing the emirate as a premier media powerhouse.
