Record 64 Million Immigrants in the EU by 2025

Record 64 Million Immigrants in the EU by 2025

Post by : Shweta

In 2025, the number of immigrants in the European Union has achieved a remarkable peak of 64 million, signifying a noteworthy trend in migration dynamics over the past years. A recent analysis indicates that immigrants now constitute around 14% of the EU's total populace, showcasing consistent growth since 2010.

Data sourced from Eurostat and the UNHCR reveals an increase of 2.1 million migrants in 2025, despite a slight deceleration in growth compared to 2024, hinting at a stabilization in migration patterns.

Germany tops the EU as the preferred destination for immigrants, accommodating nearly 18 million foreign-born individuals. This figure has surged from roughly 10.5 million fifteen years earlier, underlining Germany's pivotal role in international migration. About 72% of these immigrants are of working age, significantly influencing the country’s workforce and economic landscape.

In addition to being the largest host of immigrants, Germany is also home to the most refugees in the EU, with around 2.7 million individuals seeking asylum within its borders, highlighting its dual responsibilities in managing economic and humanitarian migration.

Conversely, Spain is witnessing the fastest influx of immigrants, with around 700,000 new foreign-born residents added within a single year. This quick expansion reflects the changing migration trends, with southern European nations gaining prominence as preferred destinations.

While the overall immigrant population continues to rise, a notable decline in asylum applications has been observed across the EU, dropping by 26.6% from the previous year. This indicates a complex evolution in migration, characterized by an increase in long-term residents coupled with fewer new asylum seekers.

In summary, the latest statistics reveal that migration remains a vital element in shaping the demographic and economic context of the EU. Although the growth trajectory persists, the deceleration in pace and the reduction in asylum claims reflect an evolving migration narrative across the region.
