France Bids Farewell to Pandas as One Returns to China Due to Health Issues

France Bids Farewell to Pandas as One Returns to China Due to Health Issues

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Two giant pandas from Beauval Zoo in central France are being returned to China following a kidney failure diagnosis for one of the pandas. The female, Huan Huan, and her companion, Yuan Zi, arrived in 2012 under China's “panda diplomacy” initiative, designed to send these beloved animals worldwide as emblems of friendship.

Initially expected to stay until January 2027, the early return decision was prompted by Huan Huan's health struggles. They are set to fly to the Chengdu panda sanctuary in China for their retirement, with their departure occurring on a Tuesday, drawing a heartfelt farewell from numerous visitors.

More than 200 fans braved cold and rainy weather to bid goodbye at the zoo, including a couple from Bordeaux who donned panda-themed attire. They proudly noted that they had visited the pandas over a thousand times.

These pandas made history as the first in France to raise three cubs, delighting many and contributing to the zoo's surge in popularity, which attracted around two million visitors in 2023. The eldest cub, Yuan Meng, was sent back to China earlier in 2023, while the younger twins, Yuandudu and Huanlili, will remain in Beauval for the time being.

The zoo's director explained that kidney issues are common among older pandas like Huan Huan. While her health issue brings a somber note, there is hope for ongoing collaboration with China to keep pandas at Beauval past 2027.

The bond between pandas and their staff, along with the public, has been significant, with the panda keeper recalling exceptional memories, especially the first panda birth in France.

Giant pandas, classified as “vulnerable” rather than “endangered,” are rare, with only about 20 zoos outside of China housing them, serving as vital cultural symbols.

Panda diplomacy first began in 1972 when China gifted pandas to the United States following President Nixon's historic visit, using the animals as agents of goodwill and friendship across nations.
