Shipping gifts from Canada to the United States this holiday season has become significantly more challenging due to newly imposed tariffs by the U.S. government that apply to even minor packages. This change effectively abolishes the prior exemption for low-value shipments, complicating efforts for Canadians wishing to send presents to friends and family across the border.
Previously, items valued under US$800 could be sent to the U.S. without incurring any duties thanks to the “de minimis” exemption. However, with this exemption now eliminated, almost all packages are subject to duties. Gifts valued at under US$100 may now also require careful assessment for appropriate tariffs, adding complexity for those wanting to ensure timely delivery of holiday gifts.
According to Canada Post, all U.S.-bound packages now necessitate proof of duty payment. This generally requires using online payment services or applications that allow users to pay duties upfront and obtain a declaration ID along with a QR code. Shippers must show this proof at the post office before sending their packages, ensuring compliance with U.S. customs regulations to avoid delays or returns.
This new regulation is particularly significant for Canadians sending gifts sourced from countries like China, as these items now need formal customs paperwork. Additionally, certain products, such as food items, may face substantial shipping restrictions, further complicating holiday gift-giving.
The shipping landscape for Canadians has also diminished, as many courier companies have ceased providing services for small packages to the U.S., leaving options like FedEx and DHL as primary alternatives. For these shipments, a customs broker is often necessary for clearance. This shift means that something that once seemed straightforward now demands thoughtful planning, more time, and increased expenses.
Small businesses are likewise feeling the impact of these tariffs, as they depend on cross-border shipping to connect with U.S. consumers. While the additional steps may appear cumbersome for individuals, they are vital to ensure timely and safe delivery of gifts.
This holiday season, Canadians wishing to send gifts to the U.S. should prepare in advance, utilize endorsed prepayment applications, and familiarize themselves with the new customs regulations. Early preparation can help manage the added complexities, ensuring gifts successfully reach their intended recipients without unexpected complications.
