Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party, known as CHP, is preparing to hold a new party congress after meeting legal requirements following a major court ruling that triggered political tensions inside the party. Reinstated party chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu confirmed that a congress would take place but stressed that all procedures must follow party rules and legal frameworks.
The political crisis began after a Turkish court removed the previous CHP leadership, leading to confusion and growing divisions within the country’s largest opposition party. The development also caused concern in financial markets as investors closely monitored the political uncertainty surrounding the opposition movement.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul, Kilicdaroglu said the timing of the congress would be decided after consultations with the party’s legal team. He emphasized that the process must remain lawful and transparent and that collective decisions would be made through party institutions.
Kilicdaroglu stated that there was no alternative to holding a congress and insisted that the CHP would continue operating within democratic procedures. He also said the party assembly could soon meet to discuss the next steps regarding the leadership issue and future organizational plans.
The veteran opposition leader dismissed speculation about possible expulsions or disciplinary action against party members. According to him, any such decision would only happen according to official party regulations and after proper internal procedures are followed.
The crisis has exposed deep internal divisions inside the CHP after former leader Ozgur Ozel proposed a direct leadership vote involving nearly two million party members instead of relying on traditional delegate voting. His proposal has sparked debate within the opposition camp over the future direction of the party.
Kilicdaroglu also criticized the closure of the CHP headquarters during protests following the court ruling. He said it was not appropriate to prevent lawmakers, supporters, and the public from entering the party building during a sensitive political period.
Political analysts believe the ongoing conflict inside the CHP could reshape Turkey’s opposition politics ahead of future elections. The party has played a central role in challenging President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government and remains one of the country’s most influential political organizations.
Observers say the upcoming congress will be closely watched because it could determine the future leadership structure of the opposition party and its strategy against the ruling government in the coming years.
