Meta has officially rolled out paid subscription options for its key platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, signaling a shift from its traditional advertising-driven model.
Naomi Gleit, Meta’s Head of Product, announced this development through a video message on Instagram. She confirmed that Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus are being launched globally, with plans for future offerings tailored for businesses, content creators, and AI functionalities.
This initiative comes at a critical juncture as Meta garners heightened scrutiny from investors regarding its substantial investments in AI infrastructure, with an annual capital expenditure forecast ranging between $125 billion and $145 billion primarily focused on AI data centers.
Following the announcement, Meta's stock experienced a nearly three percent uptick.
As per reports, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will have a subscription fee of $3.99 monthly, while WhatsApp Plus will be priced at $2.99 per month.
The subscription plans will provide various premium features. Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus subscribers will benefit from enhanced analytics, story rewatch data, broader audience reach, and customization of profiles.
WhatsApp Plus will emphasize personalization, adding features such as exclusive stickers, customized ringtones, and unique themes for the application.
Additionally, Gleit indicated that Meta aims to combine its subscription offerings under a unified brand known as “Meta One.”
Earlier this year, Meta trialed ad-free subscription options for Facebook and Instagram in Europe to comply with EU privacy laws, providing users the choice between a free ad-supported model and a paid ad-free alternative.
