The eighth day of Shardiya Navratri 2025, celebrated on September 29, is dedicated to Maa Mahagauri, the eighth form of Goddess Durga. Devotees worship her as the embodiment of purity, peace, and serenity, seeking her blessings for health, prosperity, and inner strength. Maa Mahagauri is widely revered across India for her calm and compassionate nature.
Her name, “Mahagauri,” literally means “extremely white,” symbolising her radiant purity and spiritual brilliance. She is commonly depicted with a fair complexion, wearing white clothes, and riding a bull (Nandi), signifying power combined with tranquility. Her gentle appearance reflects her qualities of serenity, kindness, and forgiveness.
According to Hindu mythology, Maa Mahagauri is the reincarnation of Goddess Parvati, who wished to marry Lord Shiva, the supreme ascetic dwelling in the Himalayas. Shiva, immersed in deep meditation, was detached from worldly affairs. To win his heart, Parvati undertook extreme penance (tapasya) for thousands of years. She meditated in harsh weather, endured storms, heat, and cold, and survived initially on leaves and eventually only on air. Her rigorous austerities darkened her skin and made it rough, but her determination never wavered.

Pleased by her devotion and perseverance, Lord Shiva appeared before her and accepted her as his consort. He restored her original golden-white complexion, giving her the name Mahagauri, which signifies “the extremely fair one.” This transformation represents the power of devotion, patience, and faith in overcoming hardships.
On this day, devotees perform special puja rituals, chant mantras, and offer prayers to Maa Mahagauri. The popular chant for her is: “Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah.” Devotees also wear the auspicious colour of the day – peacock green, a blend of blue and green. This colour signifies compassion, spiritual balance, renewal, and the harmony of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual energies.
Many followers visit temples and homes where idols of Maa Mahagauri are adorned with white clothes and flowers. Devotional songs, aartis, and meditation sessions mark the celebrations, creating an atmosphere of spiritual reflection and festivity.
Worshipping Maa Mahagauri is believed to remove sins, grant peace of mind, and bring prosperity to households. Her devotion teaches the importance of patience, inner strength, and faith in achieving life’s goals. The eighth day of Navratri emphasizes purity, calmness, and the victory of good over evil.
Across India, millions of devotees participate in the nine-day festival, honouring the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Day 8 stands out as a day of reflection, spiritual growth, and devotion to Maa Mahagauri. As the festival continues towards its final day, the celebrations remind people of the values of compassion, purity, and harmony, inspiring them to cultivate inner peace and righteousness in daily life.
