Navratri Celebrations in Pakistan Go Viral with Garba and Dandiya

Navratri Celebrations in Pakistan Go Viral with Garba and Dandiya

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Navratri, one of the most important Hindu festivals, is not only celebrated with great enthusiasm in India but is also making waves across borders. This year, videos of Navratri celebrations in Pakistan have gone viral on social media, highlighting the cultural harmony and shared traditions that connect people beyond geographical boundaries.

The viral videos, widely shared on various platforms, feature traditional Garba and Dandiya dance performances taking place in Karachi and other cities in Pakistan. Participants, dressed in colourful ethnic attire, can be seen celebrating the festival with joy and devotion, creating a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of Navratri festivities in India.

One of the videos was posted by Preetam Devria, a Hindu resident of Pakistan, who shared glimpses of a Navratri event organised by the local Hindu community. The celebration featured music, dance, and prayers dedicated to Goddess Durga, and was attended by people of all ages. Another popular video shared by Dheeraj from Karachi captured a similar scene, where devotees came together to perform Garba and Dandiya during the nine-day festival.

The social media response to these videos has been overwhelmingly positive. Many users from India and around the world expressed happiness and surprise at seeing Navratri being celebrated with such enthusiasm in a predominantly Muslim country. Comments filled with warm wishes, heart emojis, and greetings like “Happy Navratri from India” reflected a spirit of unity and appreciation for cultural diversity.

Some users were also curious about the Hindu community in Pakistan, asking questions about traditions and dietary practices. Responding to such queries, Preetam Devria confirmed that there are indeed vegetarians and Jains living in Pakistan, further showcasing the diversity of the country’s cultural and religious landscape.

Navratri, which means “nine nights,” is a festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga and her nine divine forms, known as Navadurga. It is celebrated with devotion, dance, music, and fasting, symbolising the victory of good over evil and the triumph of light over darkness. This year, Navratri is being observed from September 22 to October 2, culminating with Vijayadashami or Dussehra, a day that marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana and Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura.

Each day of Navratri is associated with a specific form of Goddess Durga, from the gentle and nurturing Maa Shailputri to the fierce and protective Maa Kaalratri, each representing different aspects of strength, wisdom, and spirituality. During this time, devotees perform rituals, offer prayers, and participate in cultural activities like Garba and Dandiya, which symbolise devotion and the cyclical rhythm of life.

The viral videos of Navratri celebrations in Pakistan have become more than just a festive highlight — they are a powerful reminder of how traditions can transcend borders and bring people together. They reflect a message of peace, coexistence, and respect for cultural heritage, showing that festivals like Navratri are not confined by geography but shared by people who cherish faith, joy, and togetherness.

In a world often divided by politics and ideology, such celebrations stand as proof that cultural and religious traditions can build bridges and foster understanding between communities. The Navratri festivities in Pakistan not only showcase the enduring spirit of the Hindu community there but also underline the universal appeal of India’s rich cultural heritage.
