Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire, Pakistan and the United States have escalated their diplomatic initiatives to set up another round of discussions with Iran.
In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi engaged in crucial talks with U.S. Charge d’Affaires Natalie Baker, emphasizing the next steps for negotiations. Official sources reveal that both nations reviewed their diplomatic strategies and discussed the urgent need for continued dialogue given the shifting regional dynamics.
This meeting occurs as momentum builds for rekindling negotiations between Washington and Tehran, possibly within the upcoming days. Naqvi praised the recent ceasefire extension declared by Donald Trump, viewing it as a pivotal step towards de-escalation. He conveyed hope that Iran would take a constructive approach and confirm its involvement in the upcoming discussions.
Positioned as a vital mediator in this crisis, Pakistan's leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military officials such as Field Marshal Asim Munir, has been actively promoting peaceful resolutions. Officials remarked that they are making “all-out efforts” across multiple fronts to keep the diplomatic dialogue ongoing.
Yet, uncertainty lingers over Iran's participation in the proposed second round of talks, as its foreign ministry has yet to provide an official confirmation, indicating that no decision has been reached. This ambiguity raises concerns about the likelihood of negotiations advancing as scheduled.
The initial round of discussions earlier in April did not yield a significant breakthrough despite lengthy talks. Following that, Islamabad has enhanced its diplomatic outreach while increasing security in the capital. Reports suggest that more than 10,000 security personnel have been mobilized in anticipation of the potential high-profile meeting.
Currently, the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran remains tenuous. Earlier, Pakistan advocated for its extension to allow for increased diplomatic efforts, a request that was positively received in Washington. Nevertheless, tensions still run high due to ongoing military pressures and unresolved key issues.
The next few days are expected to be pivotal as the U.S. indicates readiness for talks soon, although the lack of clarity from Iran continues to create uncertainty around the process. For now, Pakistan's diplomatic initiatives remain crucial in preventing further escalation and fostering dialogue opportunities.
