New York, Sep 27, 2025: Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for a criminal investigation against US President Donald Trump and officials involved in recent military strikes on boats in the Caribbean, which killed several people. Speaking at the annual United Nations General Assembly, Petro accused Trump of “criminalising poverty and migration” while condemning the deadly attacks.
The US military carried out three strikes this month, claiming the targeted boats were transporting drugs and linked to Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang. According to the Trump administration, the first attack on September 2 killed 11 people, while the second on September 16 left three dead. A third strike last Friday killed another three.
Petro rejected Washington’s claims, stating that the passengers were not gang members or traffickers but “poor young people from Latin America who had no other option.” He stressed that launching missiles on unarmed civilians was unjustifiable. “Criminal proceedings must be opened against those responsible, even if it includes the highest-ranking official who gave the order: President Trump,” Petro declared.

His remarks followed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s announcement that his government is preparing constitutional decrees to safeguard national sovereignty against potential US military action. Maduro has long accused the US of using drug trafficking allegations as a pretext to destabilise his government.
The Trump administration defended the operations, calling them a necessary step to curb drug trafficking into the United States. However, critics argue the strikes lacked transparency and disproportionately targeted vulnerable individuals.
President Petro, Colombia’s first leftist leader, has consistently promoted diplomacy and regional cooperation since taking office in 2022, including restoring ties with Venezuela. His UN speech underscored a strong call for justice, international accountability, and protection of Latin America’s poor communities.
