Nepal’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is set to formally elect Balendra Shah as its parliamentary party leader, a crucial step that could pave the way for him to become the country’s next prime minister.
According to party officials, the RSP’s central committee meeting is scheduled in Kathmandu to officially endorse Shah as the leader of its parliamentary party.
The development comes after the party’s strong performance in the March 5, 2026 general elections, where RSP emerged as a dominant political force in Nepal’s House of Representatives.
Shah, a 35-year-old former rapper-turned-politician and former mayor of Kathmandu, has quickly risen as a prominent national figure. He has garnered widespread support, particularly among young voters and those advocating for political reform.
Reports suggest that once elected as parliamentary party leader, Shah will be formally positioned to lead the government. His swearing-in as prime minister is expected soon, with internal discussions already underway regarding the formation of the cabinet.
The RSP’s parliamentary strength places it in a strong position to form the government independently, in line with constitutional provisions.
Shah’s rise marks a notable shift in Nepal’s political landscape, reflecting growing public support for younger leadership and anti-corruption initiatives amid increasing demands for systemic reform.
With the leadership decision imminent, attention is now focused on the formation of the new government and the policy direction under Shah’s leadership.
