Australia’s celebrated striker Sam Kerr made a sensational return to Chelsea’s starting eleven, netting twice in a resounding 6-0 victory over St Polten in Austria during the Women’s Champions League. This match, held on Tuesday, was Kerr's much-anticipated first start for Chelsea in nearly two years—692 days to be exact—since her last full game. It also marked her first 90-minute performance since overcoming a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in January 2024.
The 32-year-old forward faced a long recovery journey. Following her ACL tear, she underwent surgery and a rigorous rehabilitation process that sidelined her for several months. Although she made her return to the pitch in September 2025, manager Emma Hayes had opted for gradual reintegration, initially giving her substitute minutes. Tuesday’s match represented a significant milestone in her comeback, and Kerr seized the opportunity by scoring two well-placed goals in the latter half.
Kerr entered the match with enthusiasm but missed several early chances, including one that was ruled out for offside. However, she gradually found her rhythm, exhibiting her signature poise and finishing skills to score twice in the second half, contributing significantly to Chelsea's commanding 6-0 win. Her performance reminded fans of her status among the elite strikers in worldwide football.
After the match, Kerr expressed her joy at being back in top-tier football, stating, “I’m just happy to be out here playing in the Champions League again with an amazing team. I’m relishing every moment,” in an interview with Disney Plus. She acknowledged that regaining full-match fitness was challenging, adding, “It felt like I had to work myself into it, but yeah, happy to score. Coming on for 20 minutes is a bit hectic, so this was nice.”
Chelsea's triumph over St Polten not only displayed their prowess but also solidified their standing as one of Europe’s preeminent women’s teams. They completely dominated the match, scoring six unanswered goals. This victory strengthens their position in the Champions League group stage, as they aim for the elusive European trophy. Manager Emma Hayes commended the team’s dedication and intensity, with Kerr's two goals being a notable highlight.
Sam Kerr’s successful return is also a significant boost for the Australian national team, who are gearing up to host the Women’s Asian Cup in March. As the captain reinstated earlier this year, she is expected to play a vital role in her team’s quest for glory on home soil.
Kerr's year has included personal hardships; she navigated legal troubles in London but was ultimately found not guilty of racially abusing a police officer. This outcome enabled her to refocus on her football career, and she has since participated in friendlies against England and Wales for the Matildas. Her resilience and ability to maintain a positive outlook have garnered admiration from teammates and fans alike.
Feeling ready for the next phase of her career, Kerr commented, “Getting some good minutes in the national team was a good setup. I’m definitely fit enough—just about getting more miles in the legs now. I feel 100%, but I was out for a while, so I have to build myself up.” Such remarks illustrate her relentless determination and commitment to the game.
Now, Kerr’s focus shifts back to club competitions as Chelsea gears up to face Liverpool in the Women’s Super League on Sunday. The forthcoming match will provide her with yet another opportunity to build on her scoring form and further bolster Chelsea's strong league campaign. After a confidence-boosting night in Europe, fans are eager to witness her performance.
Sam Kerr’s triumphant return transcends mere sports; it’s a narrative steeped in determination and passion for football. Having returned to the starting lineup after almost two years, she has come back stronger and more focused. Her impactful two-goal outing against St Polten serves as a reminder that she remains one of the most formidable forwards in global football. As she seeks to regain her rhythm with Chelsea and set to lead the Australian side, Kerr’s journey exemplifies resilience in sports.
