KL Rahul, the captain of India, recognized that his team needed to enhance their sharpness in critical moments, suggesting that losing the toss significantly influenced India's four-wicket loss to South Africa in the second ODI held in Raipur on Wednesday.
Batting first after losing the toss, India amassed an impressive 358 runs for five, driven by centuries from Virat Kohli (102 off 93 balls)—his 53rd ODI century—and Ruturaj Gaikwad (105 off 83 balls), who marked his maiden hundred in ODIs. Despite this formidable score, South Africa successfully chased it down, finishing at 362 for six in just 49.2 overs, with Aiden Markram making a stellar contribution of 110 runs, supplemented by significant scores from Matthew Breetzke (68) and Dewald Brevis (54).
Following the match, Rahul noted, “Not really a tough one to swallow given how much dew there is, making it challenging to bowl in the second innings. The toss is crucial, so I’m disappointed.” He emphasized that while a score over 350 seemed competitive, there were areas where India could have pushed for an additional 20-25 runs to ease the pressure on the bowlers.
Praising the innings of Kohli and Gaikwad, Rahul remarked, “It was truly enjoyable watching Rutu bat, especially how he accelerated after reaching fifty. Virat continues his exceptional form, as we've seen time and again.”
This victory marked South Africa's highest successful ODI chase in India, much to the delight of captain Temba Bavuma. He stated, “Heading into this match, we were determined to elevate our bowling performance. Building partnerships was essential, and sending Brevis in early proved advantageous. This illustrates the level at which we need to compete with India.”
Bavuma also pointed out that the internal competition within the team is motivating players to excel. “The talent in this team is top-notch, and everyone recognizes the need to perform at their best. Such performances significantly boost our confidence.”
