Redefining Masculinity: The Rise of the Performative Male in Fashion

Redefining Masculinity: The Rise of the Performative Male in Fashion

Post by : Saif Rahman

A refreshing shift is emerging in men's fashion, dubbed the “performative male” trend, which has taken social media by storm—gaining over 20 million views on posts tagged #performativemale.

This new archetype is characterized by an affinity for oversized pastel hoodies, relaxed-fit trousers or skirts, whimsical tote bags adorned with delightful charms like the Labubu doll, and often clutching a matcha latte or a book. He confidently mixes comfort with artistry, embracing a softer, more imaginative side of masculinity.

Gone are the days of the archetypal male wardrobe filled with rigid shirts, jeans, and conventional suits. Younger generations are now leveraging their fashion choices as a canvas to express their individuality, emotions, and moods. This evolution marks a departure from rigid notions of masculinity toward a more versatile and expressive identity.

Fashion designer Prasoon Sharma from Triune underscores this freedom of expression, stating, “Today, many men are using fashion as a way to express themselves. They experiment with a variety of colors, accessories, and fabrics that previous generations might have deemed unmasculine. From pastel shades to pearls, tote bags to shortened jackets—it's all about embracing one's personal style.”

This trend correlates with the broader notion of “performing masculinity,” transforming fashion into storytelling tools that express cultural and artistic engagement. Each outfit reflects a narrative about identity.

The performative male goes beyond mere fashion; he embodies it through curated selfies and calculated poses, aiming not just to look appealing but to project an understanding of style and emotional depth.

Social media’s influence on this trend cannot be overstated. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have driven a more visual, emotional, and personal approach to fashion. Young men are sharing “fit checks,” outfit vlogs, and playful mirror selfies, garnering admiration for their confidence and creativity over traditional masculinity norms.

The Labubu doll—a charming collectible figure often seen attached to bags—has emerged as an emblem of this movement, representing a fusion of playfulness and self-assuredness. Accessories like a Labubu charm, a matcha beverage, or an art-printed tote relay a clear message: it's acceptable for men to have fun with fashion.

Experts observe that this trend signifies a broader societal transformation. Modern men are increasingly transparent about their emotions, mental well-being, and appearances, with fashion serving as a means of self-expression. “What was traditionally seen as feminine is simply fashion today,” emphasizes designer Sharma. “It transcends gender and focuses on personality.”

However, some skeptics question whether the label “performative” implies superficiality. They argue that many young men may adopt this style for social media validation rather than as a reflection of their true selves. Conversely, advocates view it as a positive shift—evidence that men can successfully harmonize style, sensitivity, and expressiveness.

The reality likely lies somewhere in between. The performative male aesthetic stands at the junction of fashion, identity, and social media, encouraging men to explore and publicly share their self-discovery.

Each article of clothing, from a meticulously selected tote bag to a delicate pearl necklace or a pastel hoodie, narrates a story. It conveys a straightforward truth: modern men are increasingly unafraid to be visible.

As this trend evolves, it becomes clear that fashion transcends mere appearance; it encompasses how men feel about their attire and how these feelings forge connections with the world.
