Istanbul, Turkey: A family of four from Germany has faced an unimaginable tragedy while vacationing in Istanbul, with investigations now focusing on potential pesticide exposure at their hotel. The Bocek family, including parents Servet and Cigdem and their two young children, Kadir (6) and Masal (3), fell seriously ill after their stay at the Harbour Suites Old City hotel in the city’s historic area.
Traveling from Hamburg, Germany, on November 9, they indulged in local dishes such as mussels with rice, baked potatoes (“kumpir”), grilled lamb intestines (“kokorec”), and Turkish delight. Shortly after their meal, the children began to show signs of nausea and vomiting, which later affected the adults.
While authorities initially pointed to food poisoning, the family sought medical attention on November 12 but was dismissed after treatment. Sadly, the mother and her two children lost their lives on November 13, while the father succumbed on November 18 despite receiving intensive care. Dr. Abdullah Emre Guner, Istanbul’s Regional Health Chief, has expressed his condolences and confirmed that an ongoing investigation is underway.
New Evidence Points to Pesticide Exposure
Reports from Turkish media, referenced by CBS News, indicate that toxic pesticides used at the hotel for a bed bug problem may be to blame. Chemicals, potentially aluminum phosphide, were applied in a ground-floor room and might have infiltrated the Bocek family's first-floor accommodations through the ventilation system. Additionally, two other tourists fell ill at the same hotel around November 15, leading authorities to gather samples from bedding, pillows, water bottles, and blankets for forensic examination.
The investigation has expanded to include 11 people, comprising hotel staff, the owner, and the employees from the pest-control company involved in the fumigation. The Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate, Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, and Forensic Medicine Institute are collaborating to uncover the true cause of death and determine if negligence or chemical mishandling played a role in this incident.
The deaths of the Bocek family have reverberated through the local community and among international observers, raising immediate concerns regarding safety protocols in Turkish hotels and the management of chemical pest control. Authorities face mounting pressure to ensure accountability and thorough inspections, as families and tourists demand clarity and preventative measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
This incident underscores the critical importance of adherence to safety protocols and chemical handling regulations within hotels, reinforcing the deadly risks posed when these systems fail. Investigators are continuing their efforts to find answers and avert future calamities.
