A shocking aviation incident unfolded on Sunday when a 13-year-old Afghan boy was discovered hiding in the landing gear compartment of a commercial flight from Kabul to Delhi. The boy’s daring and highly dangerous attempt came to light upon the arrival of KAM Air flight RQ-4401 at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport around 11:00 am. Airport staff noticed unusual activity during the aircraft’s arrival and immediately alerted security personnel, who found the boy stowed in the rear central landing gear compartment.
According to officials, the boy, a resident of Kunduz city in northern Afghanistan, managed to access the restricted area at Kabul airport and climbed into the landing gear compartment. He later claimed that he did this purely out of curiosity and did not fully understand the severe risks associated with hiding in such a compartment. Experts have highlighted that stowing away in the landing gear is life-threatening due to extreme temperatures, lack of oxygen, and the mechanical dangers involved during flight operations.
The boy was apprehended by KAM Air airline personnel and handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Terminal 3 of IGI Airport. During the initial inquiry, the boy confirmed that his act was driven by curiosity rather than any intention of illegal migration or escape. Following standard security protocols, the aircraft underwent a thorough inspection of the landing gear compartment, which revealed a small red speaker believed to belong to the boy. Anti-sabotage and safety checks were conducted to ensure the aircraft was fully safe for subsequent operations.
After completing all necessary procedures, the boy was repatriated to Afghanistan on the same aircraft, which departed Delhi around 12:30 pm. Officials emphasized that no other objects or threats were found inside the compartment, and the aircraft was declared safe to continue operations.
This incident has raised serious concerns about airport security, both in Kabul and internationally. Aviation authorities warned that stowing away in a plane’s landing gear is extremely dangerous, with high risks of injury or death from exposure to freezing temperatures, lack of oxygen, and mechanical hazards during takeoff, flight, and landing. The incident has sparked discussions about the need for stricter security protocols and monitoring measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Aviation experts stressed that this episode underlines the importance of vigilance at airports, the necessity of safeguarding restricted areas, and the need for educating the public about the extreme dangers of such risky behavior. Officials are now reviewing airport security measures at Kabul and other major airports to ensure no similar incidents occur in the future
