During the third day of the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland, play was momentarily paused after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. The tremors were felt throughout the venue, prompting players, officials, and fans to express concern.
Irish players quickly exited their dressing room and moved to safety near the boundary. While most spectators remained seated, they intently observed the unusual occurrence. After a brief assessment by match officials, play resumed, enabling the game to carry on without further disruptions.
Prior to the quake, Ireland was struggling, sitting at 98 for 5 when Stephen Doheny and Lorcan Tucker stepped in to revive the innings. They displayed composure under pressure, forming an 81-run partnership and pushing Ireland to a total of 113 runs.
Bangladesh had solidified their stance in the match during Day 2, bolstered by centuries from Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das. Resuming at 340 for 5, they generated significant runs, with Mushfiqur scoring 106 and Litton Das also hitting a century, leading to a formidable team total of 476.
Ireland's bowlers earlier showcased remarkable performance; Andy McBrine took six wickets, and both Matthew Humphreys and Gavin Hoey contributed with two each, marking the first occasion where Irish spinners claimed all ten wickets in a Test innings. However, Ireland's batting faced challenges against the Bangladeshi spinners, leading to early wickets before Doheny and Tucker steadied the ship.
The earthquake added an unexpected twist to an already eventful day in cricket. Despite the brief halt, both teams remained focused, making the day memorable and intense for players and spectators alike.
