Kicking off 2026 in spectacular fashion, Abhishek Sharma struck an impressive 84 runs from just 35 deliveries, leading India to a decisive victory against New Zealand in the opening match of their five-game T20I series. India posted a formidable 238/7, marking their highest total in T20Is against New Zealand, with the visitors falling short by 48 runs.
The host team faced early challenges, losing two wickets quickly as Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy managed to dismiss both Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. Nonetheless, Sharma's resilience shined through as he unleashed four sixes during the powerplay, helping India reach 68/2 within six overs. Suryakumar Yadav also contributed significantly, showcasing his signature strokes. Sharma's rapid fifty came within 20 balls, and he formed a strong 99-run partnership with Yadav before the latter’s departure.
Continuing his offensive, Sharma hit two more sixes before an unfortunate miscue. Even with time on their side, India pressed forward, with Shivam Dube scoring swiftly and Hardik Pandya adding 25 runs off 16 balls. Rinku Singh finished the innings on a high note, remaining unbeaten on 44, courtesy of two sixes and two fours against Daryl Mitchell.
Chasing a target of 239, New Zealand encountered immediate challenges as Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra were dismissed in the second over. Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman attempted to stabilize the innings but couldn’t withstand the pressure, much credit going to Varun Chakaravarthy who took key wickets post-powerplay.
Although Phillips tallied 78 runs from 40 balls, regular wickets prevented New Zealand from mounting a serious challenge. Chakaravarthy dismissed Chapman, while Santner and Mitchell could do little to mitigate the defeat. India clinched a convincing 48-run win in this opening T20I matchup.
