The Saskatchewan Roughriders have parted ways with wide receiver Ajou Ajou following an investigation by the Canadian Football League regarding allegations of misconduct. The CFL's findings stated that Ajou was involved in “aggressive and unwelcome physical contact” with several women at a Regina restaurant on November 18, 2025, coinciding with the team’s Grey Cup celebration.
The allegations surfaced in late January, prompting an immediate third-party investigation that included interviews with Ajou, eyewitnesses, and the complainants. Upon examining the evidence, the league found Ajou in violation of its policies on gender-based violence and harassment.
As a result, the CFL has imposed a suspension on Ajou for the entirety of the 2026 preseason and at least six regular-season games. The league outlined specific conditions required for any potential reinstatement, including a minimum of 15 sessions of mandatory counseling with an expert in gender-based violence, undergoing a psychological evaluation, and a formal meeting with Commissioner Stewart Johnston. Non-compliance with these conditions would lead to more severe penalties.
The Roughriders have reacted decisively, asserting that Ajou’s actions diverge from the team's core principles. General Manager Jeremy O’Day stressed the significance of respect, integrity, and conduct within the organization. He confirmed that the team promptly reported the allegations to league officials as soon as they became aware.
O’Day remarked on the incident’s context, noting that it occurred during the Grey Cup celebrations. However, he emphasized that such circumstances don't justify inappropriate behavior. He described the situation as disheartening, reiterating the team's commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all.
Despite the potential for future reinstatement by the CFL, O’Day made it clear that Ajou Ajou will not be welcomed back to the Roughriders under any circumstances. He characterized talks with the player as difficult yet necessary in light of the investigation's serious implications.
The CFL has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting victims affected by such incidents through providing access to experienced consultants, counseling services, and safety resources. Meanwhile, local Regina authorities have indicated that they have not received any formal complaints concerning this matter.
This incident underscores the league's stringent approach to player behavior and highlights its dedication to fostering accountability and respect, both on the field and in the community.
