Algoma Steel, one of Canada’s leading steel manufacturers, has begun notifying 1,000 employees of layoffs at its Sault Ste. Marie facility, occurring just two months after being granted $500 million in government funding designed to enhance employment stability and upgrade its operations. The financial package includes $400 million from the federal government and $100 million from the Ontario government, aimed at facilitating the company's shift to electric-arc furnace technology, projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80%.
Analysts had predicted these layoffs, given the reduced labor requirements associated with the new technology, compounded by U.S. steel tariffs impacting cash flow. Labor union representatives have voiced concerns, arguing that the loans lacked stipulations for job retention. Algoma’s CEO has stated that the government was informed of the company's strategy to gradually discontinue its blast furnace operations.
These loans form part of a larger initiative to sustain Canada's steel sector while promoting environmental advancements, even as workforce reductions appear inevitable.
