Amazon has decided not to move forward with its plans to introduce commercial drone deliveries in Italy, marking a significant shift in the company’s ambitions to expand futuristic logistics solutions in Europe. The decision follows a strategic internal review that assessed regulatory conditions, business feasibility, and long-term operational goals within the country.
The e-commerce giant had earlier shown optimism about launching drone-based deliveries in Italy. In December 2024, Amazon announced the successful completion of initial drone delivery tests in San Salvo, a town located in the central Abruzzo region. These test flights were conducted under the supervision of aviation authorities and were viewed as an important milestone in bringing faster, automated delivery services to Italian customers.
Despite this progress, Amazon stated that broader regulatory and business-related challenges ultimately influenced its decision. While engagement with aerospace and aviation regulators was described as positive, the company concluded that the overall business regulatory framework in Italy does not currently support the long-term objectives of its drone delivery programme.
In an official statement, Amazon said the decision was made after careful consideration of all factors affecting the project. The company emphasized that the move was strategic rather than technical, indicating that aviation safety approvals were not the primary obstacle. Instead, issues linked to the wider regulatory environment and commercial viability played a decisive role.
Italy’s civil aviation authority, ENAC, expressed surprise at Amazon’s announcement. The regulator noted that the decision appeared to be driven by internal company policy and recent financial developments involving the Amazon group, rather than any failure to meet aviation standards or testing requirements.
Drone delivery has been a key part of Amazon’s vision to revolutionize last-mile logistics by reducing delivery times and easing pressure on traditional transport networks. However, the company has faced varying regulatory landscapes across different countries, with rules governing airspace use, data protection, safety, and commercial operations differing significantly from one region to another.
Amazon clarified that halting the project in Italy does not necessarily mean abandoning drone delivery ambitions altogether. The company indicated that it remains open to revisiting the idea in the future if regulatory and business conditions become more favorable.
For now, Amazon will continue to rely on its existing delivery network in Italy, focusing on efficiency improvements through conventional logistics while monitoring technological and regulatory developments that could shape future innovations.
