Apple has officially secured the US broadcast and streaming rights to Formula 1 in a landmark five-year agreement, marking a major expansion of the tech giant’s sports portfolio. The Formula 1 deal, beginning next year, positions Apple TV as a key destination for live sports fans in the United States, following the massive success of the Apple-produced F1 movie starring Brad Pitt. This Formula 1 partnership signals Apple’s intent to compete with streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+, leveraging the soaring popularity of Formula 1 in the US.
While financial terms were not officially disclosed, reports suggest the Formula 1 deal is worth $140 million annually, surpassing the $90 million per season ESPN previously paid for Formula 1 broadcasts. Apple’s Formula 1 streaming agreement will provide fans with complete access to every practice, qualifying, sprint session, and Grand Prix throughout the season. Select races and practice sessions will even be available for free via the Apple TV app, ensuring Formula 1 reaches a wider US audience.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, expressed enthusiasm over the Formula 1 deal, saying the partnership allows Apple TV subscribers to enjoy front-row access to one of the fastest-growing sports globally. Formula 1 has rapidly gained popularity, adding nearly 90 million fans worldwide last year alone, with China leading the surge after Formula 1’s post-COVID return to Shanghai. This Formula 1 surge provides Apple with an opportunity to attract new subscribers and keep existing viewers engaged throughout the racing season.
The Formula 1 streaming deal comes on the heels of Apple’s cinematic success with F1: The Movie, which has grossed over $628 million globally and is set to debut on Apple TV on December 12. Apple’s Formula 1 strategy integrates entertainment and live sports, appealing to both moviegoers and racing fans. With Formula 1 now on Apple TV, subscribers can expect a seamless streaming experience with high-definition broadcasts, immersive coverage, and in-depth analysis of every Formula 1 race.
As live sports become a critical differentiator in the streaming industry, Apple’s Formula 1 acquisition underscores the platform’s commitment to delivering premium content and capturing devoted fanbases. Formula 1 fans in the US can look forward to a full season of racing action, accessible anytime through Apple TV, enhancing the Formula 1 experience while helping Apple strengthen its position in the competitive streaming market.
This Formula 1 expansion also highlights Apple’s ongoing investments in sports content, joining Major League Soccer and Friday Night Baseball in its growing lineup. By acquiring Formula 1 rights, Apple is tapping into one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, offering US audiences thrilling racing action while reinforcing Apple TV’s status as a go-to platform for live sports, entertainment, and immersive viewing experiences.
