Tokyo Skytree Reopens After Elevator Malfunction Suspension

Tokyo Skytree Reopens After Elevator Malfunction Suspension

Post by : Shakul

The Tokyo Skytree reopened to visitors on Thursday after being closed for three days due to an elevator malfunction, according to its operator.

The observation deck, located 350 meters above ground, had been shut after 20 visitors were trapped inside an elevator for more than five hours on Sunday. The incident occurred inside the tower located in Sumida Ward.

The operator, Tobu Tower Skytree Co., said the problem was caused when strong winds made the 634-meter tower sway. This movement damaged a bundle of wires connecting the elevator to its control panel, blowing the panel’s fuses.

Due to the malfunction, two of the four elevators connecting the base commercial complex to the observation deck stopped working. The elevator carrying the visitors came to a halt about 30 meters above the ground.

Rescue teams later positioned a neighboring elevator and installed a temporary panel between the two cabins. The trapped visitors were safely evacuated through an emergency door. No injuries were reported.

On Thursday morning, more than 100 visitors lined up before the tower reopened at 10 a.m. Many expressed relief and excitement at being able to visit again, while also hoping for improved safety measures.

The operator said inspections and repairs were completed before reopening and that steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
