A nearly blind Rohingya refugee from Myanmar was found dead in the city of Buffalo, days after being released from jail and left alone by U.S. Border Patrol, authorities said.
The victim, Nurul Amin Shah Alam, aged 56, had been missing since February 19. He was released from a county jail and dropped off at a coffee shop several miles away from his home during freezing winter conditions.
Buffalo police confirmed his body was discovered on a downtown street on Tuesday evening. Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan described the incident as preventable and criticized federal immigration authorities for making what he called an inhumane decision. He said the man was vulnerable, nearly blind, and unable to speak English.
According to officials, Shah Alam had spent nearly a year in jail before agreeing to a misdemeanor plea deal. After his release, immigration authorities took custody but later dropped him off instead of ensuring a safe return home.
Family members said they were not informed about where he was left. They added that Shah Alam could not read, write, or use electronic devices and relied heavily on family support.
The case has raised serious concerns about the treatment of refugees and the responsibility of immigration authorities toward vulnerable individuals.
