The Asia-Pacific aviation sector is on the verge of significant expansion, as Airbus predicts a demand for 19,560 new aircraft over the next 20 years. This figure represents 46% of the global requirement of 42,520 new aircraft, highlighting the region's pivotal role in the aviation industry's future.
Leading the Charge: India and China
Anand Stanley, President of Airbus Asia-Pacific, notes that passenger traffic in the area is projected to grow at an annual rate of 4.4%, which exceeds the global growth average of 3.6%. He remarked, “With more individuals taking to the skies each year, our region stands at the threshold of exciting growth,” emphasizing India and China as the main drivers of this trend.
India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally, with airlines consistently increasing their fleets through significant aircraft acquisitions. Airbus anticipates a need for 3,500 wide-body planes and 16,100 single-aisle jets in the Asia-Pacific region over the next two decades, amounting to 43% and 47% of global demand, respectively.
Infrastructure Development Spurs Demand
Recent upgrades to India's aviation infrastructure are further fueling this demand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, a ₹19,650 crore project aimed at establishing India's first completely digital airport. Offering features like online baggage drop, digital immigration processes, pre-booked parking, and an automated people mover, NMIA will help alleviate crowding at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Covering an area of 1,160 hectares, this airport is projected to accommodate up to 90 million passengers annually upon full operation. Its connectivity with expressways, metro systems, suburban rail, and water transport is set to redefine passenger convenience.
Meanwhile, the Noida International Airport at Jewar has successfully completed essential calibration flights, indicating its readiness for commercial use. Linked to both the Yamuna Expressway and Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the airport aims to serve the Delhi-NCR region and nearby cities like Agra and Meerut, enhancing travel accessibility.
Airline Strategies for New Routes
In line with the new infrastructure, airlines are adjusting their operations. IndiGo has announced it will launch flights from Navi Mumbai airport on December 25, initially connecting ten domestic locations, including Delhi and Bengaluru, with plans for further expansion.
Akasa Air is also set to operate from Navi Mumbai beginning December 25, starting routes between Delhi and Navi Mumbai, followed by connections to Kochi, Goa, and Ahmedabad. The airline aims to expand to 300 domestic and 50 international departures each week, reflecting a robust confidence in India's growing aviation market.
Anticipating Demand and Future Trends
With escalating passenger numbers, the growth of low-cost carriers, and improved airport facilities, the Asia-Pacific region is poised for a transformative phase in aviation. Specifically, India and China are anticipated to play critical roles in fulfilling global aircraft demand, positioning the area as an essential hub for manufacturers, airlines, and investors worldwide.
Airbus’ forecasts underscore both the magnitude of this growth and the latent opportunities for airlines, airport operators, and related industries as they prepare for soaring demands in the coming years.
