Atletico Madrid continued their impressive run in LaLiga with a strong 2-0 win over Real Betis on Monday night, extending their unbeaten streak to nine matches. The goals from Giuliano Simeone and Alex Baena secured a crucial victory for Diego Simeone’s side, marking a turning point in their away performances this season.
The victory was a huge relief for Atletico Madrid, who had struggled on the road earlier in the campaign with an opening loss to Espanyol followed by draws against Alaves, Mallorca, and Celta Vigo. With this win, Atletico Madrid climbed to fourth in the LaLiga table with 19 points, trailing Villarreal by one point and Barcelona by three. Real Madrid continue to lead the standings with 27 points, while Betis dropped to sixth with 16 points.
Atletico Madrid made a statement early in the match on a rainy evening in Seville. In just the third minute, Giuliano Simeone—son of head coach Diego Simeone—opened the scoring with a stunning low volley that found the bottom corner. The early goal gave Atletico Madrid the perfect start, showcasing their attacking intent and tactical sharpness.
However, after taking the lead, Atletico Madrid shifted into their familiar defensive setup, allowing Real Betis to dominate possession. Betis pushed hard, especially through Abde Ezzalzouli, who caused problems for the Atletico defence throughout the first half. The winger came close to equalising in the 27th minute, forcing goalkeeper Jan Oblak into a brilliant one-handed save that kept Atletico Madrid ahead.
Atletico Madrid nearly doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Julian Alvarez narrowly missed the target after a strong counter-attacking run led by Simeone. But their patience and defensive discipline paid off just before halftime. In first-half stoppage time, Alex Baena finished off a quick counter-attack with a beautifully placed shot into the top corner, giving Atletico Madrid a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Real Betis came out determined to fight back, but Atletico Madrid remained organized and resilient. Oblak once again proved his class, making several vital saves to deny Betis, including a crucial moment in the 58th minute when Abde’s free kick struck the crossbar. Despite the pressure, Atletico Madrid held firm and managed to keep a clean sheet, showcasing their defensive strength and composure.
Speaking after the match, goalkeeper Jan Oblak praised his team’s effort and focus. “Happy for a very important and hard-fought victory,” he told Movistar Plus. “We played well in the first half and took our chances. In the second half, we sat back too much and gave them opportunities, but in the end, those are three very important points we’ve earned.”
This win not only boosts Atletico Madrid’s confidence but also strengthens their title hopes as they continue to build momentum in LaLiga. With key players stepping up and their defence looking solid once again, Atletico Madrid appear ready to challenge the top teams in Spain.
