Bangladesh Bans IPL Telecast After Mustafizur Dropped by BCCI

Bangladesh Bans IPL Telecast After Mustafizur Dropped by BCCI

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a move that has shaken the international cricketing landscape, the Government of Bangladesh has ordered an immediate suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL) telecast across the country. The unprecedented decision follows a serious diplomatic and sporting dispute linked to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the exclusion of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

Mustafizur Rahman, one of Bangladesh’s most respected cricketers and a proven performer in the IPL, was widely expected to play a significant role for KKR. His sudden removal, reportedly carried out without any clear or formal explanation, sparked widespread anger in Bangladesh, with fans, former players, and senior officials expressing strong disapproval.

In an official statement, Bangladeshi authorities said the decision by the Indian cricket board had deeply hurt public sentiment. The statement highlighted that no logical justification for Mustafizur’s exclusion had been communicated, leading to frustration and disappointment across the country.

Under these circumstances, the government directed broadcasters to immediately stop airing all IPL matches and related programming until further notice. Officials said the order was issued in the public interest and with the approval of the appropriate authorities.

The dispute has now moved beyond broadcast restrictions and is beginning to affect international cricketing events. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has formally approached the International Cricket Council, requesting that Bangladesh’s matches in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup be shifted out of India.

According to sources, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has informed the ICC that it will not send the national team to India for the tournament, scheduled to begin on February 7, 2026. Matches originally planned to be held in Mumbai and Kolkata have been requested to be relocated to Sri Lanka, citing concerns over player trust and security.

Cricket analysts warn that if the standoff continues, it could lead to a prolonged breakdown in cricketing ties between India and Bangladesh, similar to long-standing barriers seen in other international rivalries. Such a situation could also impact future bilateral series and broader regional cooperation in the sport.

As tensions remain high, the global cricketing community is awaiting the ICC’s response, with hopes that constructive dialogue can help prevent long-term damage to international cricket.
