In a tragic revelation, the Bangladesh government confirmed on Wednesday that pilot error was responsible for the deadly fighter jet crash that struck a Dhaka school in July, claiming the lives of 36 people and injuring over 170. The crash at Milestone School and College marked the country’s deadliest aviation accident in decades.
The Chinese-made F-7 BJI fighter jet went down on July 21, moments after students were dismissed from classes. Initial reports suggested a mechanical failure during a routine training mission, but the government committee’s report concluded that an error during take-off by the 27-year-old pilot led to the catastrophic collision.
Authorities noted that the pilot tried to divert the jet away from densely populated areas but was unable to prevent the aircraft from crashing into the two-storey school building. Many victims suffered severe burns, and the incident triggered nationwide shock and outrage.
The government has recommended relocating military flight training outside Dhaka to prevent future tragedies. “Infrastructure such as hospitals, schools, warehouses, and small industries should not be built near airports,” said the report, urging the Civil Aviation Authority to enforce stricter zoning regulations around airbases.
The crash had previously ignited demands from citizens for the air force to move its training programs away from the capital, citing the risk to densely populated neighborhoods. While the military initially resisted, citing strategic needs, the new report underscores the urgent need for safer training locations.
This incident has highlighted critical gaps in urban planning and aviation safety oversight in Bangladesh. Moving forward, authorities are expected to implement stricter measures to prevent such disasters and safeguard public spaces near airfields.
