The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to remove Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their lineup for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed this directive on Saturday, mentioning that KKR will have the opportunity to recruit a replacement once Rahman is released.
This decision follows alarming reports from Bangladesh regarding attacks on the Hindu community, leading to renewed discussions in India about the participation of Bangladeshi players in this year's IPL.
Mustafizur was acquired by KKR during the IPL mini-auction in Abu Dhabi for INR 9.20 crore after a competitive bidding war with Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Post-selection, KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan found themselves under fire from various political figures who voiced concerns about national sentiments amid growing tensions between India and Bangladesh.
In his IPL career, Rahman has represented several franchises, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings. In the 2025 season, he played three matches for Delhi Capitals, achieving four wickets. Across his IPL tenure, Rahman has appeared in 60 matches, with a total of 65 wickets. After signing with KKR, he received a no-objection certificate from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to forgo a home series against New Zealand for IPL commitments.
While this development has implications for Rahman's participation in the IPL, the BCCI has not provided a statement regarding India’s planned tour to Bangladesh in September 2026, which features three ODIs and three T20Is. The tour was originally postponed due to unrest in Bangladesh and is set to commence on August 28, as announced by the BCB.
This action by the BCCI underscores the complex overlap of cricket, politics, and public sentiment. KKR now faces the task of quickly identifying a substitute player to ensure a competitive squad for IPL 2026.
The situation emphasizes the sensitivity surrounding sports in relation to international relations. The selection of players often hinges on their abilities and track records, but geopolitical events can significantly affect decisions in prominent tournaments like the IPL. For Mustafizur Rahman, this move means he will miss out on playing for KKR this season despite his prior contributions and experience.
As IPL 2026 approaches, the focus will not only be on the cricketing action but also on how teams and governing bodies manage political and social issues while assembling their rosters.
