The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has brought attention to the Asia Cup trophy that remains elusive, during the recent ICC Board meetings held in Dubai. This situation is part of a puzzling standoff lasting over a month that has left the cricket community bewildered.
India secured the Asia Cup championship by defeating Pakistan in the final on September 28 in Dubai. Yet, nearly a month later, the team has not yet received their trophy, which reportedly remains under the control of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also leads the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Positive Discussions Reported
According to sources, the discussions during the ICC meeting were cordial yet direct. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia represented India and insisted that the trophy “justifiably belongs to the Indian team” and should be returned without delay. He reiterated that this situation is about respecting the athletes and upholding the spirit of cricket, rather than a political matter.
It is reported that the trophy is currently located at the ACC’s office in Dubai, with explicit instructions that it cannot be relocated without Naqvi’s consent.
Offer for Mediation from ICC
The ICC, tasked with managing international cricket, has extended an offer for mediation if necessary. There is the possibility of forming a special committee to expedite the resolution. Concerns were echoed by various ICC directors, who believe that delaying a championship trophy undermines the sport’s integrity and governance.
Mohsin Naqvi’s attendance at the meeting was uncertain until shortly before it commenced. Despite missing several recent ICC events, he arrived just in time for the discussions, adding a layer of intrigue to the situation.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy originated on the night of the final when Indian players reportedly declined to accept the trophy directly from Naqvi, citing his position as Pakistan's interior minister as inappropriate within the politically charged context. Subsequently, the trophy was discreetly taken off the stage, leading to confusion.
Following this incident, the BCCI formally reached out to the ACC for the trophy's handover but did not receive any feedback. The Indian board has firmly stated it will not accept the trophy from Naqvi under any conditions.
Hoping for Resolution
With the ICC now stepping in, both fans and players are eager for a dignified conclusion to this issue. India's triumph in the Asia Cup remains uncontested, yet the absence of the trophy has transformed an occasion of celebration into a challenging diplomatic standoff.
