Bill Gates credits five decades of pickleball for his fitness at 70

Bill Gates credits five decades of pickleball for his fitness at 70

Post by : Saif Rahman

At 70, Bill Gates remains energetic and physically active. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist attributes much of his wellbeing not to intense gym regimes or strict diets but to pickleball — a game he has enjoyed for more than 50 years.

Pickleball blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s straightforward to learn, gentle on the joints, and suitable for a wide age range. Gates first tried the sport as a teenager and continues to play it to keep fit and connect with friends and family.

A five-decade commitment

In a 2022 blog post, Gates described himself as a "pickler" who has played the sport for over 50 years. What began as a niche pastime has exploded in popularity: the United States now counts more than 4.8 million pickleball players, with participation rising nearly 40% in two years.

He notes the sport’s accessibility as a major draw. According to Gates, learning the basics takes only minutes, the ball travels more slowly than in tennis making rallies easier, and matches are compact and enjoyable.

Why people are drawn to pickleball

Gates emphasizes that pickleball is as much social as it is physical. "I like playing with friends and family; it brings people together," he said, and he typically plays at least weekly, increasing the frequency in warmer months.

The game requires minimal equipment — a net, paddle and ball — and can be played indoors or outdoors in small courts or even backyards, offering an approachable way to stay active without long training commitments.

Health advantages backed by experts

Medical experts highlight pickleball as beneficial for both physical and cognitive health. A 2023 Cleveland Clinic report notes several advantages tied to regular play:

Improve heart health – It can raise stamina and help manage blood pressure.

Strengthen muscles and bones – Consistent movement supports muscle tone and bone strength.

Enhance balance and coordination – Quick footwork and positioning boost stability.

Boost brain health – Tactical play and split-second decisions support mental sharpness.

Physicians say the sport is particularly well suited to older adults because it’s low-impact, but they advise warming up, staying hydrated and wearing supportive footwear to reduce injury risk.

A global pastime

Pickleball’s appeal has reached celebrities as well: names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt have been seen playing. The mix of playfulness, fitness and community has helped courts and clubs worldwide embrace the sport.

For tech leaders like Gates, pickleball also serves as a stress reliever — a way to unwind after demanding work while maintaining physical and mental energy.

Simple habits, lasting results

Gates’ experience highlights that sustainable fitness can come from enjoyable routines rather than arduous regimens. He argues that consistent, pleasurable activity is crucial: for him, pickleball is a decades-long habit that keeps him fit and mentally engaged.
