The Blue Water Bridge has officially taken the lead as the busiest trade route between Canada and the U.S., surpassing the long-dominant Ambassador Bridge. This change represents a significant shift in trade dynamics, largely driven by soaring toll rates and evolving logistics strategies among trucking firms.
Data from the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited indicates that the Sarnia crossing recorded over 2.1 million truck trips in 2025, surpassing the Ambassador Bridge's approximately 1.9 million. This trend appears to be continuing into 2026, reinforcing the transition in trade routes.
A primary driver of this shift is the stark contrast in toll fees. Commercial vehicles utilizing the Ambassador Bridge face tolls as high as $27 per axle, nearly quadrupling the $7 per axle at the Blue Water Bridge. This financial disparity has prompted trucking companies to seek more cost-effective paths.
Experts assert that this trend is likely to endure, showcasing how supply chains are evolving in response to increased costs. Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance, emphasized that pricing is pivotal in shaping transport directions, leading to a redirection of freight towards the more economical routes.
This development coincides with the ongoing construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is experiencing delays and budget overruns. It was anticipated to alleviate congestion and modernize the trade corridor, but its postponement has intensified traffic issues at current crossings.
Experts caution that these changes underscore the critical nature of infrastructure planning and cost management. While the Ambassador Bridge has historically led cross-border trade, the current climate demonstrates how external factors such as tolls can swiftly dictate logistics decisions.
With trade volumes on the rise, competition among border crossings is expected to heighten, particularly once the Gordie Howe International Bridge opens. Until that point, many commercial haulers will likely favor the Blue Water Bridge for its efficiency and cost savings.
