Explosions Rock Dhaka Airport Ahead of Hasina's War Crimes Verdict

Explosions Rock Dhaka Airport Ahead of Hasina's War Crimes Verdict

Post by : Rameen Ariff

DHAKA — On Thursday night, two crude bombs exploded near Dhaka airport, amplifying security alarms as Bangladesh anticipates a pivotal verdict in the war crimes trial of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently ousted.

While there were no reported injuries from the blasts, the incidents heightened the atmosphere of unrest in a capital already fraught with political instability and sporadic violence. Authorities swiftly secured the site and initiated investigations to track down those responsible.

Sheikh Hasina, who is 78, is being tried in absentia for alleged crimes against humanity stemming from a violent response to student protests in mid-2024. After her removal from power last August, she has sought refuge in India while the trial is ongoing.

The bombings occur during a particularly fraught period in Bangladesh, where political frictions have escalated due to large-scale protests and violent clashes between supporters of the former administration and law enforcement. Analysts are concerned that any flare-up ahead of the verdict could lead to heightened unrest in the capital and its surrounding areas.

In response, security forces have ramped up their presence in Dhaka, enhancing security measures around essential government sites, aviation hubs, and transport stations to mitigate the risk of further incidents. Officials are urging the populace to be alert and report any suspicious activity.

Though the reasons behind the attacks remain unclear, analysts speculate that the bombings could be politically motivated, aimed at swaying public perception ahead of the impending court ruling. The expected verdict in Hasina's case is set to carry considerable political weight for the nation.

As citizens await Monday's decision, authorities are tasked with the difficult job of preserving order and preventing violence from escalating in an already volatile political landscape.
