Northern Irish Town Renames Road Linked to Prince Andrew Amid Public Pressure

In Northern Ireland, the town of Carrickfergus has opted to remove the name of Prince Andrew from a significant roadway due to increasing public unease regarding his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This decision follows closely on the heels of actions taken by King Charles III, who has rescinded his brother's royal titles and responsibilities.

The local council of Mid and East Antrim, which oversees Carrickfergus—situated roughly 16 kilometers northeast of Belfast—unanimously voted on Monday to rename the road currently identified as Prince Andrew Way.

Councillor Aaron Skinner, who backed the motion, indicated that the change symbolizes the values of the community. He mentioned that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, as the former prince is now officially known, “no longer embodies what Carrickfergus represents.” Following the strong measures taken by the Royal Family, he believed it was timely for the town to make a similar statement.

Many locals supported the move, with some questioning why it had not occurred earlier, particularly in light of Virginia Giuffre's recent book, which reignited discussions around Andrew's troubling past. A 41-year-old care worker described the book as “damning,” insisting that the street name should have been changed much sooner. Another long-time resident noted that preserving the name had tarnished the community's reputation.

Recently, one of the street signs bearing Andrew’s name was even vandalized, illustrating growing frustration among the townsfolk.

The council is currently considering new names, with options including Princess Catherine or the late Queen Elizabeth II. A public consultation will be conducted in the coming months to finalize the decision.

While several councils across England have contemplated similar actions, Carrickfergus stands out as the first UK town to officially rename a street linked to the former prince.
