In a surprising La Liga encounter, Celta Vigo stunned Real Madrid with a 2-0 victory, marking the end of Madrid's perfect home record this season. Swedish substitute Williot Swedberg was the standout performer, netting a dazzling heel flick in the 53rd minute followed by a composed finish during stoppage time to clinch the win. The defeat leaves Real Madrid trailing four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Celta, now in 10th place after rising from 14th, employed a solid defensive strategy that effectively stifled Madrid's attacking efforts. Swedberg's first goal came via a clever cross from Bryan Zaragoza, as he skillfully redirected it past Thibaut Courtois. The second goal, scored three minutes into additional time, saw Swedberg round the goalkeeper to secure victory.
Manager Xabi Alonso made the risky call to rest centre-back Antonio Rudiger, opting for Alvaro Carreras instead. This decision backfired as Rudiger had to be substituted in due to Eder Militao's injury. Despite this change, Real Madrid struggled to penetrate Celta's defensive setup, with key forwards like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior finding space hard to come by.
Celta goalkeeper Ionut Radu displayed exceptional skill, making vital saves from Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Vinicius Junior. Madrid’s best opportunity in the first half arose from Guler, whose shot went wide after a perfect setup by Mbappe.
The situation worsened for Real when Fran Garcia received two yellow cards in rapid succession, leaving Madrid reduced to ten men. Things escalated further as Carreras was shown a red card for dissent in stoppage time, leaving the team with only nine players while Celta celebrated their victory.
Bellingham left the pitch with a cut following a clash with Borja Iglesias, adding to Madrid’s woes. Post-match, Iglesias commended his team’s defensive stability, calling the conclusion of the match “strange” while praising the focus and effort displayed by the players.
Alonso expressed dissatisfaction with his team's intensity and criticized the officiating. “We performed better when we had ten men than when we had eleven tonight,” he remarked. “We must quickly look ahead; there are many league fixtures ahead.”
This defeat is alarming for Real Madrid, who have managed just one win in their last five league matches as they prepare for a midweek Champions League clash against Manchester City.
