On Friday morning, a strong 5.7-magnitude earthquake rocked central Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and frightening residents in Dhaka and surrounding areas. The tremor struck at 10:38 AM local time with its epicentre positioned approximately 14 kilometres from Narsingdi, close to Dhaka.
People across Dhaka reported experiencing moderate shaking, with household items such as fans and lights visibly rattling. In a rush for safety, many evacuated their homes, workplaces, and schools. Footage shared on social media captured the panic that ensued.
Due to its shallow depth, the quake intensified the shaking felt on the surface. Experts noted that Bangladesh lies in a seismically active zone, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge, increasing its vulnerability to seismic events, occasionally affecting adjacent regions in India, Myanmar, and Nepal.
Regrettably, the earthquake resulted in the fatalities of six people, primarily caused by debris collapse and structural failures in Narsingdi and surrounding localities. Many others suffered injuries, and emergency personnel are deployed to provide urgent care.
Though the tremors were alarming, authorities confirmed that rescue efforts are currently in progress. Teams are checking the safety of buildings and infrastructure in Dhaka, Narsingdi, and nearby districts. Residents have been urged to stay composed, adhere to safety protocols, and refrain from disseminating unconfirmed reports regarding the quake.
The earthquake’s impact was also felt in parts of eastern India, including West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, where individuals reported experiencing lighter tremors. Users on social media from Kolkata, Cooch Behar, and Dinajpur recounted incidents of swaying structures, reflecting the quake’s extensive reach.
Officials underscored the necessity of earthquake readiness in vulnerable areas, advising the public to avoid tall structures and refrain from using elevators right after tremors. They also highlighted the potential for aftershocks and urged residents to stay informed through official channels.
This incident has reignited conversations about enhancing earthquake preparedness and building safety regulations across Bangladesh and its neighbouring territories. While losses were endured this time, experts are advocating for proactive steps to minimize fatalities in future seismic events.
