A severe landslide hit Cilacap in Indonesia’s Central Java on Thursday, resulting in six fatalities and 17 missing individuals, as per authorities' reports on Saturday. The disaster, caused by consistent heavy rainfall, buried numerous homes in Cibeunying village, leaving residents in despair and first responders urgently working to locate survivors.
As reported by Antara, Indonesia's state news agency, Budi Irawan, the deputy head of the disaster management agency, confirmed the recovery of three additional bodies, with 17 individuals still unaccounted for. He stated, “We have found three more bodies, leaving 17 untraced. We are exerting our utmost efforts.”
The landslide occurred late Thursday after days of torrential rain had compromised the region’s slopes. Eyewitnesses described a loud rumbling just before mud and debris surged through the village, burying homes and trapping residents.
Rescue teams, consisting of disaster management officials and local volunteers, are actively engaged in search operations. Heavy machinery is being utilized to clear debris, while teams systematically sift through the impacted area in hope of finding survivors. “Time is crucial,” emphasized Budi. “We are tirelessly working to access those potentially trapped.”
Authorities have cautioned residents in surrounding hilly regions to stay alert and prepared for possible additional landslides, given Central Java's recent spell of heavy rains.
This disaster underscores the increasing susceptibility of Indonesian communities to natural disasters, intensified by climate change and deforestation that compromise slope integrity. Landslides and floods have escalated in the region recently, leading to considerable loss.
Local officials are prioritizing emergency support, including shelters, food, and medical assistance for those displaced. Concurrently, national agencies are tracking weather trends to preempt potential hazards and mitigate casualties.
As the search continues, officials remain dedicated to locating the missing residents and evaluating the extent of damage to infrastructure and homes. This tragedy highlights the critical need for improved disaster preparedness and early warning systems in Indonesia’s landslide-vulnerable regions.
