China Criticizes Japan PM for Taiwan Comments Affecting Trade Relations

China Criticizes Japan PM for Taiwan Comments Affecting Trade Relations

Post by : Rameen Ariff

China has sharply condemned statements made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi concerning Taiwan, asserting that they jeopardize China-Japan relations and threaten economic collaboration between the two nations.

The remarks, which hinted at potential military actions in the Taiwan Strait, have sparked considerable outrage in China. Officials claim that Takaichi's assertions erode the political foundation of bilateral relations and could lead to severe repercussions for trade and business exchanges.

During a press briefing on Thursday, He Yongqian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce, called on Japan to adopt a more responsible stance, retract its comments, and adhere to its obligations towards China. She stated, "If Japan persists in this misguided approach, China will implement necessary responses, and Japan will face the consequences."

In response to rumors about China potentially halting imports of Japanese seafood, the spokesperson indicated that she couldn't verify such actions. Nonetheless, she underscored the intense public backlash against the Japanese prime minister's statements.

China cautioned that Japan must not expect to compromise Chinese sentiment while simultaneously pursuing economic benefits. "This is not the appropriate way to engage with China," the spokesperson remarked, urging Japan to rectify its behavior urgently.

Takaichi's comments have garnered international scrutiny, reigniting fears of militarism in the region and exacerbating tensions within the Taiwan Strait, a vital area for both regional security and global trade.

China's response underscores the escalating sensitivities regarding Taiwan and the critical need to uphold stable diplomatic and economic relations between Beijing and Tokyo.
