Cristiano Ronaldo, the legendary Portuguese striker, further extended his incredible goal-scoring legacy as he scored twice in Portugal’s 2-2 draw against Hungary in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. The 40-year-old superstar demonstrated once again why he is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a precise close-range strike, marking his 40th goal in World Cup qualifiers. This goal allowed him to surpass former Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz. He then added a second goal during first-half stoppage time, pushing his tally to an astounding 41 goals in just 51 qualifying matches.
With this achievement, Ronaldo now holds the record for the most goals in FIFA World Cup qualifiers, outpacing Lionel Messi, who has scored 36 goals in 72 matches. This record adds to Ronaldo’s already impressive international career, which includes:
Most international goals in men’s football: 143
Most appearances for a men’s national team: 215+ caps
Most goals in UEFA European Championship history: 14
Despite Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Hungary, Ronaldo’s performance highlighted his consistent ability to perform on the biggest stages. Portugal had led 2-1 until Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai scored in stoppage time, denying Portugal a win that would have strengthened their qualification position.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez admitted that the team failed to manage the final minutes well, allowing Hungary to equalize. Nevertheless, Portugal remains at the top of Group F with 10 points, five ahead of Hungary.
After the match, Ronaldo expressed his excitement and determination for the team’s campaign, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “We are getting closer to our goal! Let’s go, Portugal.”
With this record, Ronaldo continues to solidify his position as a footballing icon, leaving fans and analysts in awe of his longevity and scoring ability. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi remains third on the World Cup qualifier goal list, further intensifying the legendary rivalry between the two football giants.
Portugal now looks forward to their remaining group matches, hoping to secure direct qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup while Ronaldo continues his pursuit of more records.
